The Journey
Linda McLaughlin | MAY 12, 2023

I am sitting on my porch this morning. It is a little chilly, but this is my favorite place to start my day. During the long Winter months, I miss it dearly. As I sit, I listen, and marvel at the concert of song around me. I marvel at, not only the sound, but the sight of all the beautiful birds. Some have been with me for the Winter, but many have just made their way back. Have you ever really watched them and wondered in awe at the journeys they take.
It is really so amazing. These delicate looking creatures travel hundreds and hundreds of miles each year, guided only by nature, their instinct, their own heart and soul. What can they teach us?
As I watch the hummingbirds, so tiny, I know that they must not fight the currents. They allow the current to carry them, to help them, trusting that they will eventually end up where they are meant to be. Do they ever feel like the current is pushing them the wrong way? Undoubtably, but they still hang on for the ride and they still arrive at their destination. When the snow geese fly south and Winter with birds like pelicans, do they stay, just because that's what the other birds are doing? Of course not, they know and trust their path, even when it looks different from another's. They trust nature and know where and how to find that space that is truly meant for them.
I think of our journey's day by day. How often do we trust our instincts, our hearts, the currents of life to carry us where we are meant to be? How often do we struggle to answer even a simple question like what do you want for dinner? If birds lived in fear of singing the wrong song, traveling the wrong path, if they didn't trust their instincts I wouldn't be sitting here right now, listening to this chorus, smiling at the antics of the hummingbirds, marveling at the color of the orioles. Yes, the birds can teach me to trust that the currents of life are carrying me where I am meant to be. I may not always understand them but if I hang on, if I don't fight them, I will end up where I am meant to be. I will learn that I need to trust my journey, even if it doesn't look exactly like everyone else's. It is my path, and it will lead to my destination. And I can remember that nature is a marvelous thing. Nature can guide us, heal us, take us where we need to be.
