Turn off the GPS

You are here!
But where are you really. We often treat this journey of life much as we would a journey by car. We climb on board, and we set the GPS. We are constantly looking towards a future destination...a vacation, an event, the to do list, a dreaded meeting. We have our sights set, we play scenarios over and over, we anticipate, we dread, we look constantly ahead. But what is the real destination? Thich Nhat Hanh tells us that our destination is here and now. This moment....right here, right now. The moment in which you are inhaling and exhaling. In the words of Buddha "The past no longer exists, and the future is not here yet." The only moment that truly matters, the only moment in which we can find peace and joy is now.
How can you turn off the GPS? It takes practice. Start with your breath. Become aware of each inhale and exhale. Let that guide you towards true awareness of the present moment. Take time, even just a minute or two, to sit or walk with your breath each day. Just allow yourself to be. Practice stopping. We are a society that prides ourselves on busyness, running from one thing to the next. Practice stopping. Stop and listen, smell, hear, look. Notice the life and energy that is around you in this moment. Take it all in. Capture these small moments of presence and awareness. You will begin to notice that it becomes easier with time. You will become more aware of that GPS leading you away from the destination of here and now. You will find the power to turn off that GPS and arrive at the destination of here and now.
Namaste.
